“Recorded at the height of the bachelor pad lounge music revival of the mid-’90s, this set of superior mood and background music has its appeal. Joey Altruda plays bass and guitar and is joined by a variety of flexible Los Angeles musicians including Red Young on piano and organ, saxophonist Doug Webb, flutist Artie Webb, and a few Latin percussionists, with guest tenor soloist Plas Johnson popping up on three songs. The music (mostly originals by Altruda) is atmospheric and a touch exotic without being too substantial. A historic curio of sorts.”
~All Music Review by Scott Yanow
This new release is a companion piece to my 1995 release “Cocktails With Joey”, which was hailed as one of the best recordings of the 90’s retro/lounge lounge revival.
Perfect for parties, “Booze, Babes, & Bongos” encompasses Mambo, Cha-Cha-Cha, Twist, Surf, Exotica, Be Bop, Bump-N-Grind and more!
Digital Release Only, on: 11/3/17
This 3 song E.P. was recorded live in studio straight to 2” analog tape. Ernest Ranglin is at the top of his game, playing some of the most burning solos – rapid fire melodic lines, balanced with simplistic elegance and rich chordal passages, supported by a rock solid rhythm section featuring Joey Altruda – acoustic bass; Mike Boito, piano; Red Young – Hammond B-3 organ; and Willie McNeil-drums.
Engineered and mixed by Bob Wayne at Sunburst Studios, Culver City.
The songs include two Skatalites classics – “Man In The Street” and “You’re So Delightful”, plus the original “Man Of Action”. These songs have been in the Altruda Vaults for a long time now and finally available to the public.
Digital Release Only, on: 2/27/17
I heard a lot of instrumental surf music when I was a kid growing up in Sunset Beach in southern California, which came in handy years later when I wrote this tune for a film called “Comic Book Villains.” (Circa 2000)
It can also be heard on the complete album, “Booze, Babes & Bongos,” released in 2017 with Avocaudio.
